About Us

Living with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Fresh Start Clubhouse emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and empower people living with mental illness, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. Established in 2000, we’re an organization driven by progressive ideas and a strong foundation of community.

Statement on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Fresh Start Clubhouse is an organization that serves people from Washtenaw County who have mental illness. Washtenaw County is inherently a diverse community, and the population that Fresh Start Clubhouse serves is likewise diverse. We believe in the value and potential of every human and powerful benefits of belonging to a welcoming and inclusive community. We also believe in sustainable, equitable community care. In our efforts to support our members, Fresh Start Clubhouse asserts a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We do this through the following principles:

  1. We are committed to promoting and supporting diversity in the makeup of the Clubhouse community and the actions our members and staff take to advocate for justice. We do this by having a Social Justice Committee, observing holidays specific to marginalized groups, seeking out educational opportunities for staff and members on various topics, and implementing DEI trainings.

  2. We do not discriminate on the basis of race; ethnicity; national origin; religion; age; gender identity and gender expression; sexual orientation; socioeconomic status; veteran status; and ability, particularly regarding mental health diagnoses.

  3. We seek to foster a community in which differences are welcomed, differing perspectives are respectfully heard, and each individual feels valued.
